University of Oklahoma and Oak Ridge National Laboratory Announce Strategic Additive Manufacturing Collaboration

The University of Oklahoma (OU) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have announced a new strategic partnership to establish an advanced additive manufacturing center in Norman, Oklahoma. This new facility will focus on the development of metal additive manufacturing technologies, with a special emphasis on applications for aerospace and national defense.

Building upon the capabilities of OU’s Sooner Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory and ORNL’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility, the center will drive innovation in metal 3D printing, hybrid manufacturing, precision machining, and advanced data analytics. The collaboration is designed to expand research opportunities, support critical national security initiatives, and contribute to workforce development in the region.

The center will also play a key role in supporting sustainment and readiness efforts at Tinker Air Force Base and other military installations across Oklahoma and beyond. By combining ORNL’s national security sciences expertise with OU’s aerospace research strengths, the partnership aims to deliver transformative advancements in manufacturing technology.

In addition to strengthening national defense capabilities, the initiative will enhance educational experiences for students and researchers by offering access to cutting-edge projects and facilities, fostering innovation and leadership in the next generation of engineers and scientists.
